In today’s social media boom, an effort to inform the world of every event in every crevice of the earth, humans have forgotten how to think.
Humans are animals, and just as we are instructed not to feed the squirrels and geese at the parks — afraid they will become dependent and forget their natural ability to hunt — we were not created to be fed information as we are now. Information is shoved down our throats from sunrise to sunset, and then even from sunset to sunrise. Some of this intake is under the umbrella of being “aware” and “informed”, and the rest is just noise. Man was made to think for himself, to rely on and develop his natural cognitive skills, but the media that started as a crutch has turned into a prosthetic.
Common sense is what humans are born with, and what they develop through growth and life experiences. Though the definition of common sense varies from person to person, depending on who you ask, it is generally accepted to be “common”. However, in today’s society, as kids at the ripe age of 6 scroll their days away, common sense has become less of a commonality, and more of an outlier.
We’ve become dependent on others to inform us, to tell us, to guide us, and to command us, so much so that our brains no longer do any of those things. We turn to Google with the simplest of questions, questions that our parents no doubt would be able to answer with their own minds. We agree that AI exists for a reason, and not taking advantage of it would be a waste, but didn’t our brains exist first? Isn’t that a waste?
We’ve become so concerned with using every tool within our reach that the one on our own head is rusting. This rust has spread throughout society putting us into a pandemic of decay.
Humans claim to be the only reasoning animal. The only animal of logic and such. We say this as we stare at the TVs and phones and wait for our computers to tell us what to do. We wait for our favorite influencers to create our morning routine, wait for our health apps to tell us where to walk, and for how long, and at what incline, and when to rest. We wait for our phones to inspire us and wait for AI to generate creativity that we are no longer capable of. We are fed every thought of every day, and this is not what we were built for. We were designed to chase. To chase answers, solutions, creativity, and ideas, but instead we are taught to stand still, and if that is too much, then to sit, and if that is too much, then to lay down and let the machines make our beds.
We are the tigers in the zoo that have been domesticated, unable to be released into the wild because we have lost our instincts.
We’ve become too accustomed to the easy life that the minute we step into the jungle we will be eaten alive. We’ve been domesticated.
